Spring denim 2023

2023 is the year of denim. For whatever reason it is everywhere and worn in every possible way including double denim.

If you buy one thing for spring, make it something denim. Denim is timeless. But its silhouettes aren’t exactly immune to fashion’s trend cycle either. Season after season, there’s continuous excitement and curiosity surrounding what specific looks will enter and exit the chat. Are low-rise jeans back? Are skinny jeans dead? Well, consider these and the rest of your burning sartorial questions for 2023’s spring denim trends answered.

It's easy to style with any wardrobe essential and even easier to fashion into any form, with dresses, skirts, shirts and more made from the failsafe fabric. The styles go much further than our favourite pair of straight-leg jeans. Consumers are seeing denim as more than the everyday basic than it once was. People are, of course, still in the market for that one great fitting pair of everyday jeans, but they’re also looking for something unique and special that they can mix into their everyday rotation.

So whilst low slung jeans are back in style it doesn’t mean we have to wear them. It’s about choosing some great denim pieces and using them back with everything else in your wardrobe for a wearable but upto date look.

Here are the spring/summer 2023 denim pieces that are bound to reap compliments.

The new jean shapes

jeans.JPG

By far the most requested or asked question to me over the past couple of weeks has been what are the newest jean shapes? I think after lockdown we aren’t so into wearing our skinny jeans anymore, something about the restrictiveness of them. Some are even saying that the skinny jean is dead, read this elle.com piece on this thought. There are some new shapes that have been around for a couple of seasons but now seem to be coming into their own. Whilst we all might still be living in comfies, jeans are the hardest working item in our wardrobe and getting the right fit for your body is one thing I can help with, but feeling upto date and stylish is what I’m updating you with right now.

Given denim’s versatility and value in your wardrobe, now is the perfect time to invest in a fashion-forward pair of jeans for Autumn. Sales of skinny jeans are down and new shapes like a tapered leg, the Mom jean and the cropped kick flare are becoming more everyday style. My new pair that I have brought this season has been the Whistles barrel leg jean in acid wash. I have this style already from Whistles but was really taken by the newness of the wash, and I have to say I have been living in them.

High waisted styles are also here to stay, long forgotten a frumpy waist, now its all about how you dress your high waisted and last year Levi’s brought out a style called Ribcage, which were the highest waist they have ever done. What used to be a fail-safe jean, the skinny jean was the staple that formed the basis of every look, now when I pop it on it can make me feel lumpy and overexposed. Maybe it’s an age thing, feeling comfortable in my clothes is something that has become more important to me over the past few years. It might be hard to part with the skinny’s but I urge you to read on and think about your own personal style.

So whether you live in your jeans and want something new to bring your style upto date, I hope to excite you with some new styles for your wardrobe.

Tapered jean or Mom jean

High waisted tapered leg shape are your new comfy go-to jeans that are very flattering if worn high waisted and can be worn with trainers, high tops or tucked into slouchy boots. I have had my Zara pair since last Autumn and have lived in them. Here are some versions of this jean shape -

Cropped ankle length kick flare

By far the most interesting new jean shape to grow over the past couple of seasons. You need to be ok with showing your ankle or wearing skinny boots that stick to the leg to fully appreciate the shape of these jeans. This shape is very flattering and will bring your jeans styling bang upto date.

Barrel Jean

These are very similar to the tapered jean in shape at the ankle but are fitted at the waist and the thigh for a more flattering shape.

Straight

A fashion girl favourite, this is your new skinny silhouette who’s popularity is growing each season. Much more flattering in the leg than a skinny, the length has to finish in the right place though. High waisted and to the ankle will look great on everyone.

High waist straight jean, Mango, £49.99

Bootcut

The bootcut and flare are the newest trend that every couple of years comes around again. There are is a 70’s trend but be careful to not go too wide leg or wide on the thighs, the most flattering bootcut is skinny on the thighs then kicking out at the calf.

White / Cream jean

I didn’t get as much wear out of my white jeans this Summer due to lockdown, but now as the season is changing I am feeling like I want to wear them. The shape I have isn’t skinny but they are high waisted and with a check blazer over the top it breaks up the white colour, making the outfit chic for the Autumn rather than Summery.

How to dress in your 30s & 40s

New Year new you right?! Where fashion is concerned it is the run up to the new Spring season's styles and launches in the stores. So over Winter clothes? But yet it's still here. So over your wardrobe? But yet it's still there. So what can you do this January without spending a fortune on clothes that you don't have but you really want to, need to, update your style? I work with a number of clients who feel this way not just every January but when you hit your thirties and struggle trying to find what is their style.

Hitting your thirties and moving into your forties are certainly milestones in your life that can shift your style perspective. Within these decades we might get married, have children, change jobs, change roles within your life, go through bereavements or enjoy the fruits of our labours. Never the less, our requirements have changed, emotionally maturing, juggling busy lifestyles, finding your sartorial comfort zone - these are all things that can shape, change and challenge our wardrobe and style.

By now you have probably experimented with fashion trends and perhaps no longer care, understand or can keep up with what is 'on trend' let alone think about it factoring into your life. So now is a good time to strip it all back and look at what items suit your body shape, your lifestyle and what makes you feel like a million dollars when wearing it!

When I start working with new clients I find that the key to creating your 'Style Uniform' is to have core pieces that work well together. Ready-made go-to looks that make getting out of the house in a morning stress-free but yet stylish. By sticking to your colour palette once you have had your colours done, this will automatically eliminate the need for countless pieces that don't go together and look random in your wardrobe. Once you understand what you want your style to be, then your 'Style Uniform' will organically build over time, ensuring that what you have in your wardrobe has longevity as well as keeping you looking stylishly young!

Here are some 'Style Uniform' ideas and key pieces to invest in,  but check your wardrobe first as you might already have them hidden in there, you just need to learn how to re-style them into your life!

1. Jackets

Jackets are an essential part of your wardrobe. It can change a look instantly, dress it up, dress it down or be your look! Anything from formal blazers, denim jackets, leather jackets, sequin jackets to leopard print fur jackets. They all go with your daily uniform of denim jeans, or can be worn on a night out with heel's and even to the office with smart culotte's or over dresses. They will last you your wardrobe lifetime as they never go out of style and it's always about the way you wear it rather than what you are wearing. Invest in jackets and you can never go wrong.

2. Shoes

"You know you are a certified shoe addict if you think there is always room for one more pair!"

Shoes speak louder than words! Shoes are the only thing I ever buy in the sale, if I have had my eye on a pair then I will happily search for them, wait for them and love them as soon as they arrive. In your wardrobe you can everything from converse trainers, to over the knee boots, ankle boots, metallic court shoes and lace up brogues. Shoes can change an outfit in an instant. So never feel bad about buying a new pair of shoes again, as long as you love them they will always love you!

3. Denim

So many people struggle with denim, me included, but we wear it most days of our lives besides corporate dressing. 2017 is the year to break away from the skinny jeans and start exploring new trends that you could look fabulous on you. Frayed hems, boyfriends, carrot shapes and even skirts are great investment pieces for the wear per £'s that you spend on them. If you are looking for longevity then you can't go wrong with Levi's, All Saints and GAP for great mid level priced jeans.

4. Shirts

I have banged on about shirts for a number of seasons now. In fashion they are still top of the list with pyjama shirts still being best sellers and khaki military shirts set make a come back and not forgetting the newest trend of shirt dresses over trousers. But forget about fashion they are so versatile in your wardrobe because of the way they are constructed, you just have to style them up. Button them up, tuck them in, belt them, leave them open, wear underneath a jumper - the list is endless and it will always be your go to piece in your wardrobe.

Is it stylish to wear white jeans?

edits styling notes

I have a style dilemma that is playing on my mind...

...is it cool to wear white jeans?

But this isn't the only question I am asking myself. Questions such as; Am I too old to wear them? Will they just get dirty all the time? Has Liz Hurley ever been a fashion icon for wearing white denim jeans? Are they better for evening wear?

There is no doubting that the white jean is back! It's the denim shade that often gets a bad rap for being hard to pull off. But I'm starting to think it's universally wearable, as long as you ditch the visions of that mutton look and style them to look effortlessly cool.

Here are some styling ideas for white jeans as an outfit

1. Wear white on white

2. Wear with a classic breton stripe

3. Keep it monochrome

4. Tone them down with a tomboy shirt

5. Wear with a simple sweater

6. Take inspiration from fashion icon Alexa Chung who seems to be able to style hers with everything

Are you slowly coming round to the idea of white jeans in your wardrobe now? It seems like they can work with a variety of tops, colours and looks (perhaps just not kids mucky fingers!). I am currently looking to buy a skinny ankle skimming pair that has rips on the legs to wear in the daytime.

Here are my top 5 edit of white jeans to buy now

1. French Connection white denim jeans £80
